TRCN Requirements for UK Visa (2026 Guide)

The TRCN requirements for UK visa include TRCN certificate, license and most especially, Letter of Professional Standing (LoPS).

TRCN requirements for UK visa purposes

Submitting the wrong documents or assuming your TRCN certificate alone satisfies the TRCN requirements for UK visa sponsorship can delay or restart your entire application.

This guide details all what Nigerian teachers need, so you don’t lose time or money to an avoidable error.

Quick highlights

  • TRCN itself is not a requirement to teach in England.
  • The Letter of Professional Standing is sent only by TRCN to UK Teaching Regulation Agency.
  • Cost of TRCN LoPS is now ₦250,000 for UK and ₦300,000 to other countries.
  • NCE and Teachers Grade II certificate don’t meet the Level 6 standard required for QTS.
  • UK QTS application for Nigerian teachers can be submitted online at no cost.
  • All payment is via the official TRCN Remita or TRA portal, never otherwise.

What’s TRCN and why it matters for UK visa

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is Nigeria’s official teacher licensing body.

And its license provides an option of turning your Nigerian teaching career into a recognised one in England.

Meeting TRCN requirements for UK visa starts with your professional standing with TRCN because UK Department for Education (DfE) will request it to license you with their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Though it’s possible to teach in the UK for up to 4 years without QTS, most UK schools prefer to sponsor those already licensed in their home country.

Because it gives them confidence in your professional standards and reduces the risk of you being unable to continue teaching once that 4 year window closes.

UK DfE wants your TRCN status for two reasons.

  • It confirms your degree and your pedagogical training are genuine.
  • It confirms you’ve not been sanctioned for professional misconduct in Nigeria.

This standard is consistent across all overseas-trained teachers route you choose.

TRCN or PGCE or iQTS routes

TRCN to teach in UK?

TRCN itself is not a UK teaching requirement.

Of course, UK schools do not require “Nigerian” teaching licence but TRCN supports your eligibility for UK’s Qualified Teacher Status.

But even without TRCN credentials, two alternatives exist to still teach in the UK.

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), which trains you in England for 1 year and earns you QTS automatically.
  • International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) route, which lets you train from Nigeria while continuing to teach locally.

So, having the TRCN requirements for UK visa is just an easier advantage but not mandatory for QTS nor is it the only way of Relocating to UK from Nigeria as a Teacher.

TRCN Letter of Professional Standing

The Letter of Professional Standing (LoPS) is the single, most important document for QTS application and UK teaching visa.

It confirms that you’re a teacher with good professional standing in Nigeria, meaning your TRCN licence is active with dues paid and no outstanding disciplinary issues.

A letter envelop flying from TRCN office to TRA in UK indicating the LoPS direct transfer

But you don’t request your TRCN LoPS first.

Instead, you apply for QTS or iQTS and receive a reference number from the UK authority before approaching TRCN to request the letter.

And TRCN sends it straight to the UK Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), so don’t expect a copy to forward yourself.

The fees for Letter of Professional Standing is paid via Remita on the TRCN portal as follows.

TRCN LoPSFees
To the UK₦250,000
To other countries₦300,000

Pay directly to TRCN, never through an agent claiming to speed up the process.

Ensure TRCN sends your Letter of Professional Standing to UK Department of Education within 6 months, otherwise your QTS application will restart.

Other documents required with TRCN certificate

Degree certificate from University of Ibadan and academic transcripts

Your TRCN certificate and Letter of Professional Standing don’t travel alone, as TRA also expects your original degree certificate with academic transcripts.

Proof of subject teaching experience of at least 9 months is also required with CV and reference letters.

The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Teachers Grade II are not accepted for this QTS route, no matter your years of classroom experience with them.

Both are below the minimum Level 6 (bachelor’s degree), standard that UK requires.

So if your highest qualification is NCE, consider a degree upgrade in Nigeria or Take the PGCE UK Study Route instead.

How TRCN support QTS application

Since August 2025, Nigerian teachers can now apply for Qualified Teacher Status online at no cost through the Department for Education’s free service.

This free route is still separate from the iQTS pathway.

For the standard QTS route, the Teaching Regulation Agency requires:

  • Your verified bachelor’s degree through UK ENIC.
  • Your official TRCN certificate.
  • Proof of at least 1-full school year of post qualification teaching experience.

Your Letter of Professional Standing is what TRA uses to cross check everything you’ve submitted against your actual professional record in Nigeria.

But rather than just a document-based assessment, the iQTS route is a full training program offered remotely by an approved UK provider for 1 year, in collaboration with your current school in Nigeria.

Once Qualified Teacher Status is granted through either route, you sit on the same pay scale as UK national teachers, a significant financial difference from teaching without QTS stated earlier.

English language requirements for teachers with TRCN

IELTS test booklet and a laptop

Nigeria is not on the UK’s list of majority English speaking countries for immigration purposes.

This means you still need to demonstrate proficiency through a Secure English Language Test.

For UK Skilled Worker visa, the required standard is CEFR level B2 from an approved provider of IELTS UKVI, not the standard Academic or General IELTS because the Home Office does not accept the standard versions for visa application regardless of your score.

But if UK ENIC can verify that your degree was taught and assessed entirely in English, it removes the need to sit any language test

This exemption requires Formal Verification through MOI rather than just stating it on your application.

From TRCN certificate to UK Skilled Worker visa

Once your TRCN documentation and QTS or iQTS status are sorted, next is to convert that into UK Skilled Worker visa for teachers application.

First, you need to Land a Job Offer from a UK school with a visa sponsorship.

Sample Certificate of Sponsorship and Nigerian Passport

Certain subjects give you an edge here.

Maths, physics and modern foreign languages remain the most Subjects Short of Teachers in UK schools. So, schools are willing to sponsor the visa process of an overseas applicant for those subjects.

On salary, teachers on the official School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document are assessed with the national teacher pay scale rather than the minimum Skilled Worker salary of £41,700 for other professions.

This means that the pay scale of the region of England you are working in is what matters for your Skilled Worker visa, not the general threshold.

Always confirm the current going rate for your specific point on the scale directly with your employer rather than relying on a single fixed number, because this detail often change year to year.

Meeting TRCN requirements for UK visa purposes and a Certificate of Sponsorship from a UK school employer leads to a successful UK Skilled Worker visa for Nigerian teachers.

And the official UKVI portal is the right place to submit that final visa application once your Certificate of Sponsorship reference is in hand.

Challenges to expect and solutions

Warning Icon over Paperwork

Some schools ask for a UK National Insurance Number before finalising sponsorship.

This creates real problem for those still in Nigeria because a National Insurance Number is only issued once you’re already in the UK.

If this comes up, confirm whether the school want it before your visa is granted or after your arrival.

Another confusion is over the old Tier 2 visa category and the current Skilled Worker visa salary rules.

Skilled Worker route replaced Tier 2 some years ago, and salary rules changed with it. So, treat any reference Tier 2 as outdated.

Finally, finding UK Schools willing to Sponsor from Abroad plus the emotional and financial strain of a process that can take 6-12 months is a big challenge in this journey.

Put your expectations around a realistic timeline, while protecting your mental health and finances during the wait.

Common TRCN and UK Visa FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is TRCN valid in Scotland, Wales and Ireland?

Not directly. Scotland runs its own separate teacher accreditation (General Teaching Council for Scotland) and Wales and Northern Ireland also have theirs separate from England’s QTS and TRA system. Your TRCN remains useful supporting evidence everywhere, but the specific process and requirements differ by nation.

2. Will my UK employer sponsor my visa after TRCN clearance?

Not automatically. TRCN clearance and QTS strengthen your UK teaching job application, but sponsorship still depends on a school with valid sponsor licence offering you a role. Completing the TRCN requirements for UK visa puts you in a strong position to be sponsored, but it does not itself guarantee that a school will do so.

3. How long does the TRCN to QTS process take?

About 12 months from initial application to final TRA decision. Having complete TRCN requirements from the start speeds up verification than submitting incomplete files and having to resupply information later.

Conclusion

While GOV.UK, Teaching Vacancies and UKVI portals are the authoritative sources for current visa rules, fees and sponsor licence checks.

The official TRCN portal is the only place to check your registration status and request Letter of Professional Standing.

Many third party agents may advertise TRCN Letter of Professional Standing processing services or guaranteed UK sponsorship in exchange for upfront payment.

But TRCN processes its own fees directly through Remita, not any third-party and no legit agent can bypass the Teaching Regulation Agency verification process.

So, treat any offer promising to speed this up for a fee as a serious warning sign and scam rather than a shortcut.
